
Quick answer: Call a professional if you notice dead or hanging branches, a sudden lean, cracks in the trunk, mushrooms at the base, a hollow center, lifting roots, or a tree crowding your home or power lines. Any one of these can mean the tree is becoming a hazard.
Most trees don’t fail out of nowhere. They drop hints for months, sometimes years, before a limb comes down or the whole tree gives way in a storm. The homeowners who catch those hints early are the ones who avoid a crushed roof, a totaled car, and a five-figure repair bill.
Here are the seven signs that a tree may need to come down, and what each one is really telling you.
1. Large dead or hanging branches
Arborists call them “widow-makers” for a reason. Dead limbs can drop with no warning and no wind. A few small dead twigs can be pruned out, but large dead branches, especially over a driveway or roof, are a serious red flag.
2. A new or worsening lean
Plenty of healthy trees lean a little. The danger sign is a lean that’s new or getting worse, particularly if you see soil cracking or roots lifting on the opposite side. That usually means the root system is starting to fail.
3. Cracks or splits in the trunk
A deep vertical crack, a seam, or a split where the trunk divides dramatically weakens the tree’s structure. Trees with major trunk cracks are far more likely to snap in high wind.
4. Mushrooms or fungus at the base
Mushrooms, shelf-like conks, or fungal growth around the roots or base of the trunk are classic signs of internal decay and root rot. The tree can look green and healthy up top while it’s quietly rotting from the inside.
5. A hollow or soft trunk
Hollowing does not automatically mean a tree must be removed. A Certified Arborist should evaluate the remaining sound wood, location of the decay, tree structure, root condition, and what could be damaged if the tree failed.
6. Damaged or lifting roots
Roots are the anchor. If they’ve been cut by construction or a new driveway, or you see soil mounding and roots lifting near the base, the whole tree may be destabilizing, even if the canopy still looks fine.
7. Too close to your home or power lines
A tree growing into your roofline, foundation, or the utility lines is a long-term liability. Sometimes strategic pruning solves it. Other times, removal is the smarter, safer investment.
Three Alabama-specific problems worth knowing by name
The seven signs above apply to trees anywhere. These three are specific to what is happening in Alabama right now, and each one has a visible symptom a homeowner can learn to spot.
Hypoxylon canker: sloughing bark and coloured dust
This is the most consequential tree disease most Alabama homeowners have never heard of. The Alabama Forestry Commission describes it as a secondary pathogen: it does not attack healthy trees, it finishes off trees already weakened by drought, construction damage, root disturbance, heat stress or repeated defoliation.
Its hosts read like a list of Alabama yard trees: water oak, post oak, red oak, blackjack oak, pecan, hickory and elm.
What you see: bark sloughing off the trunk or large limbs in sheets, revealing a smooth surface underneath, followed by a powdery spore mat that can be olive-green, tan or reddish-brown. Dark lines may be visible in the exposed wood.
Why it matters more than most diseases: it rapidly deteriorates the sapwood, which is structural. This is not a cosmetic problem that shortens a tree's life. It is a strength problem in a standing tree. There is no cure once it is established. A tree showing sloughing bark with spore mats near anything you care about should be assessed promptly.
Emerald ash borer, and yes, it is here

The emerald ash borer was first confirmed in Alabama in Calhoun County in July 2017, with a second detection in Talladega County two weeks later. It has since been confirmed in St. Clair and Shelby counties. Those four counties are all inside our service area.
The federal quarantine was lifted in January 2021, not because the beetle was contained but because containment and eradication had failed nationally; management shifted to biological control. Alabama Extension has described the state as moving to deregulate the pest on the same reasoning.
What you see: thinning that starts at the top of the canopy and works down, D-shaped exit holes about an eighth of an inch across, S-shaped tunnels under loose bark, sprouting from the trunk below the damage, and heavy woodpecker activity stripping bark to get at larvae.
The timing is what people get wrong. Systemic treatment by injection can protect a healthy ash, but it has to begin before the crown visibly thins. Once you can see dieback from the ground, the tree is usually past saving and the decision has become how to take it down safely. That decision does not improve with waiting, because dead ash goes brittle unusually fast and becomes genuinely dangerous to climb. An ash you have decided to remove is not one to leave standing another season.
Pine bark beetles, and why 2024 mattered
Alabama recorded the worst beetle year in its history in 2024. Aerial survey detected 10,253 southern pine beetle spots affecting an estimated 3.1 million pine trees, following dry conditions in late 2023 and a hot, dry early summer. The Alabama Forestry Commission calls southern pine beetle the most destructive forest insect in the South.
Three beetles matter in a yard: southern pine beetle, Ips engraver beetles, and black turpentine beetle. Loblolly and shortleaf pines are the most vulnerable, because Extension notes they have lower sap flow and weaker defences than longleaf or slash pine. Activity peaks May through October.
What you see: popcorn-like pitch tubes on the trunk, white, yellow or red-brown; sawdust-like frass in bark crevices; needles fading from green to yellow to red-brown, often from the top down. Peel a piece of bark and you may find S-shaped galleries.
What triggers an attack is almost always stress that happened first: construction root damage, drought, storm wounds, lightning strike, or trees standing too close together. An infested pine needs to come out promptly, because the beetles move to the next tree.
And three species that fail more than their share
Some trees are simply riskier neighbours than others, and three are extremely common in Alabama yards.
Water oak is the third most numerous tree in the state and the USDA Forest Service describes it as shallow-rooted and extremely susceptible to butt rot. Shallow anchorage plus decay at the base is the classic Alabama residential failure. Water oak is also a primary hypoxylon host. A mature water oak with upper-crown dieback near a house is the tree we are called to look at most often.
Silver maple has brittle wood, is highly susceptible to ice damage according to Forest Service silvics, and has a shallow, fibrous root system with a reputation for finding drain lines.
Bradford pear is invasive in Alabama, and Alabama Extension confirms the cultivar was found to be structurally weak because of its branching pattern: stems of near-equal size meeting at tight angles with bark trapped between them instead of wood. That is why mature Bradford pears split down the middle in storms with such regularity.
